Mossberg 590a1 VS. Remington 870
What are your thoughts and opinions on each? which is better and why? which would you spend your hard earned money on?
I myself am a fan of the mossberg 590a1 over the remington 870. I've owned both and the only defense shotty that remains still in my safe is the mossy 590a1. All 3 of the remington 870s ive owned have had feeding problems and a couple other small problems, my mossy has had none.
I really enjoy the slimness of the remington though compared to the mossy. The trigger pull on the remington is also better, but the complete package, it does not compare to the mossy.
The mossberg (imo), are much more heavy duty than the remington, and have a much more solid feel to them. Plus you do not have to completely change your shooting grip to take the safety off, or release the slide. the mossy has a much more ergonomic feel to it. The safety is a simple push up of the thumb and the slide release is a simple push up with your middle finger.
Anyways, these are my opinions, lemme know what you think!!!

The 870 would get my vote because I had a Mossberg fail on me when I needed it. Think close proximaty to a very angry hog. The 870 I had was a solid shotgun that never gave me any problems. That being said my defense shotgun is a High Standard K120 riot gun, best shotgun I've ever had. Smoothest action, most accurate with a slug (for a smooth bore) etc. The old High Standards get overlooked because they're off the beaten path but man are they good shotguns.

Think of the people who use them for VERY IMPORTANT REASONS, like those whose lives may depend on them (law enforcement adn protection details). What do they choose? Remmy 870 or Winchester 1300. I don't install many (read ANY) in car gun locks for Mossys.
OK, think of it another way, one closer to home for me: Look at what is being used in the competition arena, USPSA or any of the non-affiliated 3-gun or multi-gun matches. It's modded Remmys just about 95% of the time. (speaking of HM division, which requires a pump 12 ga.) In the auto loader divisions its Benelli M1 super 90, Remington 1100 or 11/87, Browning gold, Winchester SX2, and now theh Saiga 12. I guarantee you that the guys who shoot them in competition go through 50x the ammo that a duty gun will ever see, and when it comes to winning matches that you paid a hefty entry fee for and drove half a day or more, you will choose the weapon that you ABSOLUTELY KNOW WILL RUN 100% FOR THE MATCH AND GUARANTEE YOU A SHOT AT WINNING.
BTW, I use a FN police model (read: Win. 1300) pump and a Winchester SX2 Practical for my shotgunning in those sports.

I am more partial to the Remington 870 (If you know me that is not a surprise). Dont get me wrong I think the location of the saftey on the mossberg is nice. The big difference between the two is that the 870 has a steel receiver and the 500 has an aluminum receiver. Besides 8,000,000 870 owners cant be wrong!

Both are very nice guns and I would own either.
Safty position doesnt bother me that much im just saying what I like better from exsperince. But I also dont fire thousands of rounds through my guns so I couldnt tell you what lasts longer

i doubt ill ever own another 870 becasue of the problems ive had before with them. i fire thousands of rounds through my guns and have never had a hiccup with my mossy. Now if your bringing up benelli and others in the mix, i think there are better guns, but between these 2, i much prefer the 590a1

What about the 590 Mariner there is one for 400 at the store by me I almost bought it. But I got no use for a tactical shotgun I use mine for hunting mostly

well in my eyes, the mariner, which is a bright nickle coating to help prevent rust, is way to reflective for a tactical type weapon. you dont want something shiny pointing out your location, thats why most of your tactical firearms are flat black or other darker shades. The bright color def looks cool on them though!!!
