Thumbs down Wal-Mart's New Gun Policy

From NRA:

Wal-Mart To Create Gun Buyer Database

Friday, April 18, 2008

Recently, Wal-Mart joined New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg at a gathering of Bloomberg’s anti-gun group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, to announce a series of changes to the way in which Wal-Mart handles firearm transactions. At the press event, J.P. Suarez, chief compliance officer for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., said: “The costs are, we think, part of what it takes to be responsible.” Suarez also added, "This is not a signal that we're getting out of firearms."

Once these changes are up and running, firearm purchases at Wal-Mart will involve a video record of the sale, which the store will keep on file -- effectively creating a video database of gun purchasers. In addition, Wal-Mart announced that its employees will be given discretion to deny firearms purchases to anyone who has had a firearm traced by BATFE for any reason -- including those who have had a firearm stolen and later used in criminal activity.

Wayne LaPierre, NRA Executive Vice President, said, “I view it as a public relations stunt that stigmatizes law-abiding firearms purchasers exercising their constitutional freedoms. I honestly think it's a corporation trying to curry favor with politicians as opposed to doing anything meaningful about stopping crime.”

If you’d like to let Wal-Mart know what you think about their new policy, please contact them by phone, at (800) 925-6278; or electronically, at http://walmartstores.com/contactus/feedback.aspx

Well I'm all for making it harder for criminals to obtain guns, but doing so without making it harder for law abiding Americans to do so. I don't think it's going to infringe on anybodies rights, if you're worring about Big Brother knowing more about your gun purchase then you probably shouldn't be buying it.

Funny thing is, the local wal-mart doesn't sell guns here. I only got here for target ammo anyhow, I have no other use for them, Nonetheless, that's retarded.

There's the shot to the groin. They have allied themselves with an anti gun group that has a standing agenda to erode our rights for 'public safety'. That makes it a huge deal. And they already keep the 4473s on file, why do they need video too. What good will that do?

Doubt it. The ease of buying guns on the street is vastly overrated by the media. Think about it, no matter where that gun comes from it costs someone something. Whether that something is money, time, risk, etc. To walk into a shop and legitimately buy a 'throw away' could cost you $75-125 (unless you find a Lorcin or something). Someone that doesn't want to or can't buy one legally is going to pay much more than that for one because either it will have to be bought by someone who legally can buy it and sells it illegally to turn a profit, or it is stolen. Either way I can't see you getting anything that will shoot under $100.

I don't really care about Walmart any way. The only thing I get there is target ammo.

All the ammo there is pretty cheap.

What I don't get though is why .380 ammo is a good bit more expensive than 9mm.

LOL, there are exceptions to every rule. I wouldn't give you $35 for a NEW Raven. We used to give them away all the time at the shop when someone bought a real gun. "Hey buy this $800 Sig and I'll give you this shiney new Raven!"
